Foix: Le Start…
The start procedure / map has now been released. Please remember that given I’m No. 8005 of 8500 riders it is a little concerning to think that 8,000+ riders might start in front of me with just 495 between me and the broom wagon. If you have seen the classic Spielberg movie “Duel” (1971) you’ll be able to empathise with my nightmares of the high revving broom wagon in my ‘rear-view’ mirror...
However, I am hoping that the map illustrates that I'll be starting in the 6001-8500 pen (the blue section on the map below). And, if I can get to the start early I might just be able to get to the front of this pen. Result. N.B. Note to self – must remember to pack tent…

I wish I could say that the current 5:30 starts are dedication induced early training sessions.
Unfortunately it is the joys of fatherhood - the little blighter likes to wake at 5:30 and of course he likes to wake us as well...
I dont know if this is good news or bad news - A chance to start more in the front, but even earlier to get up.
Do they really intend to start numbers 6001 - 8500 together in one go?

I think that an ealier start for being closer to the front is definately a good payoff. With the adrenalin surging through your veins you won't be sleeping much anyway. The further I can get from the revving juggernaut (aka the broom wagon) in my review mirror the better. If that means that 2500 riders start behind me then even better still.
If I start at the back and get caught early then I'll be v.annoyed. However, if 2500 riders have come past me and I get sewpt then I can take it on the chin - I just wasn't up to it on the day.
Glad you've enjoyed my ramblings - Hope to see you in our start pen. I'll be wearing white (jersey & gillet), riding a silver Specialized and am #8005. (Oh, and I hope to be at the front of the pen !!!).
