Weightloss: The effect of…

Estimates suggest that saving one kilogram of bike weight will save you approx 45 seconds on a climb like Alpe d'Huez, which works out at 41 seconds per 1,000 metres of ascent per kilogram. On this basis, over the course of the Etape (4,400m climbing), this could result in a saving of 3 minutes/kg. So, my weight loss of 20kg should result in a saving of 60 minutes. Excellent.

And that is just in terms of weight lost from the bike, weight loss from the rider has an even greater benefit – as this lost body fat no longer competes with your muscles for oxygen (something I am assured is in very short supply on a Pyrenean ascent). Doubly excellent.

Hi Rich.
Re: weight loss
I know an ex-pro cyclist. He tells me that when he was in training using all the data and advanced training systems, they realised that losing 1kg of bodyweight was worth 20 watts more power . It would have taken 2 or 3 months of hard training to develop that sort of increase without losing weight.

I dont know where your sources for this are "the fat competes with the muscles for oxygen" thats nonsense fat doesnt comsume oxygen! only muscle and blood consume oxygen..

as for the 1kg fat =20watts more power more nonsense! by that reckoning loosing just 5kg (pretty easy and achievable) would net 100watts extra power?!?!? hocus pocus Im afraid...the difference between Armstrong and Ullrich was only 5watts!!!!!!FFS
